Current Events 17

This weeks current event is on the topic of humour offending others, and specifically Paul Henry. Read the article from the link below and answer the following questions.

Was Paul Henry wrong to make the comments he did or was he just drawing attention to a situation that he thought was funny? Explain your answer.

Would Paul Henry have lost his job if he was doing stand up comedy on TV? Why or why not?

  1. I think it was a little bit of both because I can see the funny side of it and the wrong side of it. It does kind of sound like you know what but surely you shouldnt say that on live TV because you could easily be offending thousands of people like he has done.
No he wouldnt have lost his job on stand up comedy because people are expecting those sorts of comments because thay are funny but when its on a show thats not meant to be funny. When its on a show like breakfast people take it seriously but not on comedy.

  2. I think he was drawing attention to the situation because he thought it was funny because he is not a shy person, he likes to share his ideas and likes to have a laugh.

I don't think he would have lost his job if he were to be a stand up comedian because people expect discriminating comments on comedy shows. But people watch Breakfast to hear the news not some person taking the piss out of indians.

  3. I think that it was both because like georgie said you can see the funny side of it but also the wrong side of it. I think that he should have not said it on live television, if he wanted to say it he should have done so in a group of mates where they wouldnt take it so seriously.

I dont think he would have lost his job if he was doing stand up comedy on tv because people are expecting that sort of thing to be said. but as the breakfast show is not a comedy show........... i can see why people may be angry or annoyed because they are watching for the news not for the descriminating comments.

  4. I think that he shouldn't lose his job because it was funny and wrong at the same time and it would have been alright if it were stand-up comedy like we said in class today...
I agree with Sarah that he shouldn't have said it on live t.v and instead with some mates who wouldn't take it seriously...
I think that he shouldn't have kept going on about it though because that was what made it even worse.
But it was rude and he should have thought about it before he said it.
I think that he is the sort who like to be honest with what they think and what their opinion is...but on live t.v maybe not.

  5. I think that he wouldn't lose his job with stand-up comedy because they say stuff like that because it's what they do.
It was a joke so he wouldn't have lost his job even if it was rude

  6. I felt he shouldn't have lost his job over this comment although what he said was not professional. He knew his remark was funny. It makes him more popular on Tv and it makes good viewing. Still unacceptable, but because of the timing with the games in India the comment was in bad taste. A public apology would have been enough, instead this incident was drawn out.

If this comment was made in a stand up comedy he definitely wouldn't lose his job because making jokes about people in high jobs is acceptable. It would have gotten lots of laughs. And also the audience will be expecting things like this to be said.

  7. i think he was just trying to draw attention to the the situation although i think he did go a bit to far, he has probably learnt his lesson by now and the words probably just slipped out not releasing that it would be offensive to them.

definitely not because the comedians say worse stuff than that and they don't get fired.

  8. i dont think he would have lost his job, because it was only a joke, i get the funny side of his unnesesry comment, but it was the wrong thing to do on live television, because it was offensive to indians. I think it was the right thing to suspend him from his job so he could be a bit more sensitive for others.

i think he shouldnt do stand up because he doesn't often offend people but i know in the past he has offended some people and i dont think he would have much of an audiance because lots of people say bad words about him unless he was a very very very very very very very very funny guy he would get an audiance

  9. Paul Henry was wrong to make those comments on live T.V so that the whole of New Zealand could see. He got a bit carried away and said things without thinking.
He wouldn't get fired from saying that if it was a comedian show. Comedians say offensive funny things all. the. time.
Paul Henry isn't even THAT funny, he just laughs at things. He has a ridiculous laugh.

  10. I think its wrong in some ways and funny in some other ways, Its wrong to make fun of someones name, its disrespectful and unthoughtful. Its also kindov good publisity (Hehe) Because i would have had no idea what the "Breakfast" Show was unless he had done those things and only 600 people layed a complaint, what about the rest of the world, they would have thought it was really funny like most of us do in new zealand!!

No way, would Paul Henry loose his job if he was a stand up comedian, because people are expecting comedians to be funny and make fun of others! He would make a great comedian. And plus if he was a stand up comedian, no one would have got offended.

    Terri! :- D

  11. I think it was silly of Paul Henry to make the comments he did on live tv, but it's kinda in his nature to be like that.
I think he go carried away With it but i have to admit it was...... funny!
If he was a comedian people wouldnt have acted that way, the show is soooo boring now with out him!!!

  12. Paul Henry has said so many funny comments before but this time he went a bit too far. I was watching both of the incidents on Youtube and and I was really shocked with the way he was making fun of Sheila Diksit's last name. He was being very rude and racist the way he was making jokes and carrying on laughing the way he did.

If Paul Henry was a stand up comedian I dont think he would get fired because the audience is expecting funny but rude comments but on a live tv news program they arent expecting comments like that.

  13. paul henry was one of nz favourite reporters and when he resigned for his job most of nz was disappointed i liked that paul henry made jokes in the middle of the show and some of them were really funny and some of them were rude.

if paul was in stand up comedy he wouldn't have lost his job as the show would for laughing at.

  15. i think its a bit of both because he thought it was funny when it was pretty offensive. if it was standf up comedy then i dont think he would be fired because the person he was talking about would know he was joking

  16. If It was in a stand up comedy situation then it wouldnt have been a big deal. Since it was on live tv it was. However, the Prime Minister never said anything at the time did he??? And I have met the Governer General at my grandmothers investiture and Paul Henry is right. He doesnt look or sound like a New Zealander. Harden the .... up New Zealand.
    Henry.

  17. I think Both coz u see the funny haha side and then the bad oo side. It make breatfast more popular with him on it. I dont think he should have lost his job. He isnt like most other people because he isnt afraid to say what he is thinking inside.
Since he's gone we dont watch it anymore because he was the heart of that show no affence Pippa.

I think he wouldn't coz he is quite a funny man and id think people would like him as a stand up comedy guy. poeple would want to have a GOOD laugh and i would have to say i would laugh if he was one..... HE is Cool

  18. I don't think he should have gone that far with the jokes, but I don't think he should have lost his job.
If he had been saying those things as a stand up comedy he wouldn't have lost his job, so I think it's kinda unfair that he did.

  19. i think paul henry went too far saying dikshit in sted of dixit. idon't think that behaviour is ok on a serious tv show.

i don't think he would have lost his job on standup comody because everyone would know he is joking.

  20. i think it was wrong for paul henry to say that because it is offensive and unnesecary
