Current Events 8
THe Telethon on Sunday raised more than 2.5 million dollars for the Christchurch Earthquake. If it wasn't for the email last week to schools about the event I would not have even known that the event was on.
Did you watch the event on TV? Did you participate in any way? Do you think that the event was successful or not? and do you think that the advertising of the event was good enough? Was the Maori channel the best choice of channel for such an event?
i did not watch the event on tv as i thought it was extremly strange. I did not participate in any way because i didnt see what the big deal was about and because i didnt know about it because it was extremly badly advertised and nobody knew about it.The maori televison channel was probably not the best option because not many people know that channel
NO I didnt watch it on TV because I forgot it was on and i was on my computer. NO I didnt participate in any way. YES I think it was a huge success because all they wanted to do was raise some money for the canterbury earthquake victims and they did that. They raised 2.5 million which is more than I would have thought they would raise. NO I dont think the advertising was good enough because I didnt know about until I read the news letter and then mr spencer told us about later. I also didnt know that there was such thing as a telethon until now. YES I think that the maori channel was a good choice because every tv has it.
cam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!May 22, 2011 at 10:02 PM
I only watched bits of it because my dad flicked through the channels. I did not participate because it was my birthday that weekend. I think the event went very well because they raised 2.5 million dollars in twelve hours so it did do well. I think the advertising Was horrible if we didn’t get told about it at school I wouldn’t have know about it at all. The Maori channel was a bad channel to have it on tv two or three would have been better.
i wached all of it till the end i did not think they would get 2.5millon dollars in one day i did not participate because i was to craed to go in cos there could of be a really big earthquake and kill me ashley beattie or as somepople call me asb
I didn’t watch the telethon because I thought it was going to be boring but did kind of see it when I was flicking channels. I didn’t participate and do think it was very successful because 2.5 millions is impressive but the advertising was very poor because if Mr Spencer didn’t tell us about it I would have had no Idea it was on and wouldn’t even have flicked to the Maori channel because I think its boring. But if they were to have it on channel 2 or 3 more people would have known because it would have been on the infomercials. I personally think it would have raised more money if they picked a better channel and advertise earlier and better.
no i did not watch the event on tv because i was busy but i reckon they could have done better with the fundraising if it wasnt on such short notice they could have raised more money. with the avertising was not very good they should have put it on a channel that is more popular than the maori channel like tv 1,2or3 would have been more better
I watched about 10 minutes of it and found it boring. No, I didn’t participate in any way. I think it went really well, raising two and a half million dollars just to go toward rebuilding peoples homes and jobs and most importantly the sewage for peoples homes in Christchurch, Kaiapoi and other surrounding areas. I really think the advertising could have been better because they gave schools a week notice which is defiantly not enough time, in which case we could have raised more money than that if more schools participated. Not very many adults knew about it either. I think the Maori channel was a good idea because every television has the Maori channel. I think maybe they could have had it on another channel as well, im not sure why but I just think they should. So over all I think they did very well. Lots of people enjoyed getting pictures with Jason Gunn and Rachel Hunter and lots of other celebrities. It was a very successful event and it looks like a few people went. I think that having such an event could inspire us to have another one. But maybe they could have like some rides like the Ferris wheel or something. They aren’t very interesting but oh well it was very successful. XD ;)
i think that the people that organised it did well at organising the celebritys something that i thought was a bit wacky was that shane cameron A.K.A mountain warrior had to do that dance i only saw bits of it but that that was defenitely the worse.
the amount of money they earned was quite amazing becuase considering not many people new about it but i still think that they could of raised a bit more if it had of been longer and we had known about it sooner.
i dont think that the maori channel was the best choice becuase its not one of the mane thannels a better option in my mind would of been tv 1, tv 2, or tv 3
Q1.I watched a few minutes of the Telethon and found it quite boring and weird.
Q2.No I didn't participate in the event and I didn't evenm know where to go paticipate anyway.
Q3.I think that the amount of money made was quite alot but I thought there would be alot more money been made because this is ment to be quite a big event for New Zealand. But I still think the event was successful.
Q4.I didn't know when it was or where it was to go or participate until the letter was sent to school but then I still didnt understand where to go to participate.
Q5.I think that the Maori channel was a bad channel to have it on because not many people watch the maori channel and know how to find it. Maybe they should of had it on Channel 1,2 or 3 because that is one of the more common channels.
Q.1 I only watched 5 minutes of the telethon and what I did see I thought it was quite strange.
Q.2 I didn't participate in any way I was busy with other things to do.
Q.3 I thought the event was very successful raising 2.5 million dollars in just 12 hours. It was good that loads of people contributed to such a great cause.
Q.4 I think the advertising for this was really poor. There weren't many people in the audience for the time I was watching it. If the teachers at school hadn't of told me I wouldn't of known to flick to the maori channel to watch it. If they had taken more time to advertise it, I think it would of been a bit more successful and have made more money for the cause.
Q.5 Because the advertising could of been better I think they would of gotten away with it if they had put it on more of a common channel. Channel 1,2 or 3 for example, that is more oftenly watched.
I watched a bit of it on television, but it seemed a bit boring. I think they need to have a greater variety of things to do and play with for instance game consoles and sporty tasks where people win prizes. The acts seemed a bit tacky with the event not being prepared as well as it could have beeen. They could have had more guests to attract more attention from the people in the area. The event had it's successes, raising around 2.5 millon dollars. That means that people arem donating or making $2080.33 per hour. that is awesome. The advertising was not good because Without the teachers telling us that it was on I wouldn't have known it was on, that would probably be the only down side to the event. I think the telethon should have been on either 1,2, or 3 to get more money rained. But overall everything seemed to go very smoothely.
i watched a little bit of the dancing thing. it was really weird??? i did not participate in the telethon.
i thought it was really good that they raised heaps of money and it is going to a good cause, more recreation areas and sports feilds.
the warning that it was on was a bit slack. they could have advertised it on TV, which leads me up to the next question.
i dont think they should have put it on the maori channel because hardly anyone knows about it because all of their programs they like to watch are on channels One, 2 or 3.
Well, I watched a small part of the event but it didn’t really make me want to keep watching. I think if they wanted to attract a wider audience like our generation, then they should make a bit more modern than the classic telethon and just dancing. There could be like Ashleigh suggested games, rides and quizzes to get more people watching.
No, I didn’t participate, and I didn’t really know how if I wanted too. But I heard that lots of other people participated and went to the streets to collect money and help the appeal.
Well the money that was raised (2.5 million) shows the answer to this question! OF COURSE! It still adds 2.5 million to the Red Cross to rebuild the city/homes and could bring hope to many people. But in saying that this is a massive occasion for Christchurch, and there could have been more effort put in.
The advertising wasn’t the best for the telethon. I didn’t really know about it until a few days before because of school and the newsletter telling me, and I think I’m not the only one in this same boat. If they had more advertising they would have made way more money, and that is what this event is about. If not many people know about the event especially in the Christchurch area, then what did the rest of the country know?
If this is such a big event, then why have it on not one of the most popular TV channels. Yes, everyone does have Maori TV, but if they really care in making more money they should have put it on TV 1, 2 or 3. Some more effort could have been done in broadcasting this occurrence.

I did not watch the telethon on t.v because it seemed boring. I did not partisapate in the event because I need to be good at something to raise money. I think they got a reasonable amount of money from it but if they avertized it better a lot more people wouyld of arrived and watched more. I don't think the channel choice was a good succsess because not much people watch mari t.v because a lot more people watch channel 1,2,3,4 and sports not much people even know the channelk exists.
No i didnot watch the telethon. no i did not peartipate. yes i think the telethon was sucsessful. i think that they raised a lot of money($2.5 million!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)no i dont think that they advertised the telethon enough. because i wouldnt know if Mr.spencer hadnt told us. i dont think that the maori channel was the right channel because my t.v. doesnt have the maori channel programmed in to it.
Q1. No I did not watch the telethon because i was far to busy to sit down in the middle of the day and watch T.V.
Q2. No I did not participate in the Telethon in any way, and would not really enjoy selling stuff to people or sitting there waiting for hours for someone to come.
Q3. Yes I think the Telethon was very successful by raising (2.5 million) for the Red Cross to help rebuild Christchurch.
Q4. No I think the Telethon was very poorly advertised they could improve alot, as well they did not even put a huge effort into it.
Q5. No I think the Moari channel was probberly the best choice because no one watches that channel much or do not even have it programmed.
+ (they could of at lest advertised it on channel 1,2 or 3.)
the telethon was not well advertised. i think the maori channel was not the best channel to put it on. i decided not to watch it because i was out with my family. it was verry sucsessful in raising money.
I watched I tiny bit of the telethon and thought it was really weird! I didnt participate but i might have done if i had more time make plans! I think it was succesful because they raised 2.5 million dollars for the canterbury quake but they couldve done better if they advertized on television because a lot of families couldnt go because they had already organized a birthday party, family get together e.t.c ! They should have had it on channels one and three because thats what channels they usually put big events on.
i did not watch the telethon because i only heard about it once then forgot it which was quite bad because i probably would have watched it if it had been advertised it better
i think that it could have raised alot more money if they had advertised it earlyier and more so that people could have prepared something for it .
No, I didn’t watch the event because I forgot completely about it. I would have watched some of it if I remembered but not all because I would have gotten bored. Since I forgot about the event I didn’t participate in it at all. I probably would have gone to the arena to see it, as being there is better than watching it on TV, I would have donated some money and I would have supported everyone but as I said before I forgot so couldn’t do anything like that. I thought the advertising was really bad, not many people knew about it until a few days before it occurred and the people organising it might have earned a few more coins if the advertising was a bit better. I believe that that might have been part of the reason why I forgot. The Maori channel, I feel that it should not have been on that channel because it is not a common channel and if you want everyone to see it and give donations they need to be reminded. I think that it was an AWESOME event it was a great cause and heaps of celebs got involved to soppourt chch :D I actually went to the CBS arena and i got a photo with Rachel Hunter and Kids of 88 and opshop were there performing for free and it was heaps of fun! Not many people showed up at the event which was a little bit disappointing. I think that one of the reasons that there werent many people there was that there wasnt very much advertiseing and it wasnt on a channel that people usually flick to but it was a gerat turn out money wise considering the ammount of publicity the event got but it was worth it for the 2.5 million that they managed to raise :P

I didn't Watch the Telethon partly because i didn't understand what it was. And partly because i didn't realise it was on at the time. As i just mentioned i think advertising for the event was not strong enough.
I beleive that Maori channel was probably not the best channel to play the Telethon on, because in my opinion Maori channel is not well known as other channels may be.
Q1 I did not watch the telethon because I was doing other things . Q2 I did not participate because I was doing family activites . Q3 I think that the telethon was sucsessful and every bit of money helps . I did not not watch the telethon because I was busy all weekend and I completly forgot about it. I did not take part in any way. I think it was succsesful but sadly we didnt get as much money as we had hoped. I think it was not well avertised, my family and I didn't no about it until one or two days befor the event, they need to avertise it alot more next time. It should have been on a differant channal or on onother channel to.
i did not watch the telethon and it was not importent to me at all but i do think that they were very suscesfull and should be caried on but only on desarster because the poeple will get tired of giving up there hard worked money for a town
I didn't watch it on t.v. because it was poorly advertised, i didnt participate in any way because i didn't watch it. Due to unsuccessful advertising, i didn't know when it was on. I think the event was very successful considering they raised 2.5 million, even though so few people knew about it. The 6 oclock news gave the telethon a lot of publicity and was 1 of the main reasons of its success. Not everyone can pick up maori tv and it does not have many regular veiwers
i did not watch the event on tv as i thought it was extremly strange. I think it was succsesful but sadly we didnt get as much money as we had hoped. I think it was not well avertised, my family and I didn't no about it until one or two days befor the event, they need to avertise it alot more next time. It should have been on a differant channal or on onother channel to.
