The Government is exploring the possibility of fracking in Canterbury, a process to mine gas. Fracking is a controversial exercise at best and in this weeks blog I would like you to explore what fracking is, the potential dangers that it may cause, and whether we should be considering to do this in Canterbury.

Fracking is where somebody drills into the ground and makes tiny explosions. They do this to get the gas out of shall rocks which are too hard to break open. They enject the shale rocks with water sand and chemicals at high pressure which helps release the gas.
ReplyDeleteOne danger caused by fracking is that the gas can sometimes escape to the water underground which is our drinking water. This gas is toxic and can cause cancer, so it is very dangerous to be drinking. Also if this gas does get into your water and you lit it with fire it would ignite. Fracking can also cause earthquakes sometimes there has been two earlier this year and though they were small it is definitely not good.
I think they should definitely definitely not do this in canterbury. It would be terrible.i do not want to be drinking gassy water that could ignite. Also we may get cancer which would of course be terrible. And i dont think anyone in canterbury ever really wants more earthquakes do they?
So no matter how much many they could make it would be very very bad if they started fracking here

3: they should never think of doing fracking here. if they did i wouldnt drink any of the water because it might cause all of us to get cancer when we are older. if they did fraking here those small earthquakes could set of differnt fault lines and then it might set off the alpine fault and none of us contabrines want to be shacking and rocking for about 5-10 minutes or even longer

fraking shoudn't be allowed in christchurch because the explosions could could set off the fault lines and that lead to problems in christchruch and the chemicals could give all kids cancer and we could die.BY LANCE

Fracking is where high pressure water and sand is basted into hard shale rock underground. The rocks have gas trapped inside them. They use tiny explosions to shatter the rocks so that the gas can be released, and then attempted to be pumped through pipes back to the surface.
ReplyDeleteFracking can cause carcinogenic chemicals (Which can cause cancer)from the gas that wasn't piped up to the surface to find it's way into water supplies, the water can then catch alight. On the news I saw in Taranaki that someone's farm smelt like nail polsih remover because of the fracking and it can cause earthtremmers.
I don't think we should do fracking in Canterbury since it's such a beautiful place and fracking could ruin it. Also seven countries that used to do fracking have banned it because of the effect it had. Since it can cause earthquakes it would be terrible to have even more that can be prevented, and with all the faultlines in our area it would be catastrpohic if they were set off by the explosions under ground that fracking does.
i think we should not have fracking because it is a danger to us and to our health
ReplyDelete1.fracking is when you use explosives under the ground to shatter the shale rock lying below the suface which then releases the gas trapped inside. The gas is then sucked out of the ground.

Fracking is when you drill into the ground and use explosives to get gas out of a rock which is called the shale rock which is below the ground and when the explosives go off the gas is realesed and is sucked to the surface.

Also fracking can cause earthquakes and global which is ver very bad. We dont need anymore shakes in Christchurch i think!!
Fracking should be banned in Canterbury because we already have had heaps of quakes and we don't need anymore because we already have had enough damage done, also it is a danger to us and our health

Fracking is when water and sand are blasted in to weakish rock it causes minor earth quakes an destroys our mountain ridges I don't think it should be permitted in canterbury because we just got over the other eq's so why should we have to deal with more? People don't want to wake up in the morning to shakes it probably destroys a lot of bugs and bugs homes SAVE THE BUGS it catches people un awares and people died in the first eq coz they weren't expecting it and had heart attacks and weren't saved��so fracking should definitely not be aloud in our beautiful part of New Zeland

ReplyDeleteFraking is when a perf gun is stuffed full of very high explosives then drilled into the ground.then they pump high pressure water mixed with sand an chemicals into the cracks that they had made. The frackwater forces the gas out of the cracks and then is pumped up through the same pipe.
the last thing cantabrians need is more earthquakes! So what will fraking bring us? MORE EARTHQUAKES but thats not all it will also give us flammable water,higher risk of cancer and if an earthquake possible wiping out of 115000 animals and fish
NO WAY!!!!!!!! whoever came up with the idea of fraking in canterbury i am very ashamed of them it is the one of the most horrible things just to make money and that money will probably be used up in meical bills after people drink poisoned water

Fracking is when high explosives are pumped into the earth to break open the rocks that hold the gas's in them so that the gas's flow free then they pumped out to be used for gas heaters stoves ect
ReplyDeleteEarthquakes Earthquakes and more Earthquakes not to mention the old trick of seting your water on fire when your not actully drinking it we have tonnes make that litres of underground water ways and I'm sure that letting the gas's flow into them is not really going to harm anyone or anything not to mention the100 000 fish and the 5000 birds that died because of the fracking in the USA it is going to bejust horrible if our water ways got poisoned esspecially when we have a need to drink water and it could even cause the extiction of even more birds not to mention some of our native birds

We have had enough earthquakes government what a great idea more earthquakes HOORAY!!!!! Fracking also poisins the water with chemicals that can cause cancer. Also each well used in the fracking process use about 10'000 litres of water.
3) NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!! A. Canterbury does NOT need more earthquakes B. We don't flameable water C. We don't need Cancer!!! Fracking will also lose NZ's 100 % pure image.

No we shound not have fracking in canterbury as it will cause more earthquakes and i think that all cantabrians have had enough earthquakes. also i do not fancy getting cancer and if they did start fracking i would seriously consider moving out of the canterbury area.
