Current Events 4 Term 3 2012

Last week 8 badminton athletes were thrown out of the Olympics for "tanking", that is deliberately losing games so that they can manipulate the draw. A British cyclist that won gold, was reported to have told a journalist that he deliberately fell off his bike because the team had a bad start. This allowed his team to start again and they won the gold medal.

Where do you stand on this issue? Should athletes be allowed to underperform or even lose games so that they can get a more favorable draw in the future, or should athletes be thrown out of the games if they "tank" in their sport.

  1. i think that they should get kicked out because it is cheating just so they have a better chance of winning.

I think that they be kicked out for doing this because it as bad as using drugs and is not fair on other athletes that train hard and don't 'tank'.

  4. I think its stupid and not fair for the athletes that do train and do try hard to win. Throwing the game is a waste of the spectators time. Imagine going to see an event say soccar at the Olympics and you bought expensive tickets paid even dearer air tickets and bought accomadation then you left early in the afternoon to watch the game. One of the teams just ran beside their markers while they scored goal after goal, the goalie not even bothering to attempt to stop the balls. Huge ammounts of savings wasted on a stupid match.
Like Alyssa said its just as bad as drugs as wellas against the Olympic spirit. But it not only effects the Athletes and medal standings it effects the spectators as well. So in a way its worse. They should be banned from doing that and kicked out immediatly or asked for a explanation as to why they are losing.

  5. NO they should not be able to do this as the Olympics is designed to find the best athlete and they are basically just choosing who wins so then they don't even have to try hard to win. in fact if a country does this they should be immediately disqualified from that event. it is basically cheating and it is unfair on all the other teams who have to go and vs the harder teams just because the other team wasn't trying.

  6. i think that they should not be aloud to take part in the Olympics. i think the same as Kerrin how people buy expensive tickets to the games/races,accomadation and flight tickets and they watch a round that was not even worth watching because they are not even trying to win.if a country does so they should be disqualified and should not be aloud to take part in that activity until the next Olympics.

  7. i agree with everyone above. i most certantliy agree with kerrin about buying expensive tikets to watch the games, accomidation and flight tickets and it is just not fair on them because they are loooking foward to watching the game/race and the teams just dont try so in the end the game was not worth watching. if the country can not be botherd trying the should disculified and not be aloud to take part i that event and should also not be aloud to take part in that event for the rest of the olympics and can try again in four years time at the next olympic games.oh yeah and

  10. people who throw the game are cheating, its just as bad as taking drugs to improve your performance and i thing if someone does it they should be thrown out of the olympics, that would be heart breaking for them so it should teach them never to do it again. it would give you a bad reputation and shame your country. if you cheat its not skill its unfair. always try your best!!!!!!

  11. i think loseing a game dilebratly is bad sportsmanship and if you are in the olympics you should try to play to your best ability every time you play and i do think if you try to lose you should be kicked out and i wouldnt be proud winning if you knew that you were not versing the a team close to your ability

  12. i think that it should be banned and any team caught throwing games should be banned it also shows bad sportsmanship and its not fair to the other team because thry aren't trying their best and you should play to your best ability.

  13. I think it should be band and the teams found doing it should be charged and kicked out of the competition. Doing this ruens the games for everyone and show pore sportmaship. Especialy doing this in the Olympics is terrible.

  14. No they should not be aloud to because that just ruins the purpose of the game. people don't watch the game to see people lose deliberately, they watch the game to see, well, the game!
