What is your view on halloween. What is halloween all about? And where did it originate. What does your family do? And should children be allowed to trick or treat?

  1. my view on holloween is that it gives a day were children can go round to strangers house and get loillies of them.
moden holloween is about fun and dressing up and scareing people for the fun of it.
    holloween originated in briten,
my family dosen't bother about holloween
and i think that kids should be allowed to trick or treat at night as it is part of learning and it is a fun thing to do.

  2. Hmmm... My view on halloween is... Well i find it quite hard to explain, its a day where children can get hyped up on lollies and not get yelled at, its a day where friends come together and trick or treat, its very fun!

Im not quite sure bout the history of Halloween, but it originated in America and they take it way more seriously then we do, its like "Thanks Giving"... We don't really care about it but they make it a very big deal.

Well for 2 years in a row my family has had a really big party al my house ( Wooo! ) And there really fun and people dress up and we play random games and spot light in the dark and stuff, we decorated out house pretty creepy aswell it was really fun!

I think children should be aloud to trick or treat because its really fun and its a new experience for them, Depending on how old you are your parents sometimes come around with you so your really safe with them, and if you dont have a parent with you while you trick or treat they obviously trust you enough to be alone so yeah!

  3. Halloween was first called Samhain. It originated in Ireland. Halloween was a celebration for the end of harvest and the beginning of winter. Winter is cold and dark and associated with death.

Halloween is hugely popular in America but is now celebrated here in NZ. We get to visit various houses in spooky costumes which we call trick or treating.

My family buy lollies for children visiting our house. We don't have a problem with it as long as the younger children are well supervised with a parent.

  6. I quote;
'...The New Year, Celts believed, marked summer's end, harvest time, and the start of dark, cold winter months. Those winter months were associated with death by these people. On October 31, the night before the New Year, the Celts celebrated Samhain. This day, they believed, was when the ghosts of the deceased returned to earth because the boundaries between the living world and the dead world blurred... When we think of "Trick-Or-Treating", the origins can probably be found in the English All Souls' Day parades. During these celebrations, the poor would come out and beg for food from the more wealthy families. When the families gave them pastries called "soul cakes", they asked for the poor to pray for their relatives that had passed away.

Another possibility that may have grown into "Trick-Or-Treating" is the tradition of people leaving bowls of food in front of their homes. They did this to keep the ghosts that were wandering the earth from entering...'

A lot of people in NZ think is is rude to do trick or treating, but in the USA if you ask people for things they think it's rude, but Halloween was the one day you could ask for things.
Being from America, our family always does Halloween.

  7. halloween was origionated in well i dont know.i think halloween is cool because some kids who bearly get lollies can go roaming arpound asking strangers for lollies and there is only one night each year when you can do that i think it can be traditional because some people believe in halloween and its really fun aswell my family does do it but its just we inj the country sort of, NOT FAIR and we did buy lollies but no one came and knocked on our door so we got to eat them :) children should be able to go and trick or treat but for the young ones they should have parent supervision. mr.s your mean for taking point off me and henry grr :(

  8. I think Halloween is a great idea because it is a time when you can go out with your freinds, scare people and get FREE lollies, and it is a time for giving and other nice things......

My family doesn't participate in Halloween because we live in the country. But if I ever got a chance I probably would go trick or treating.

I think children should be aloud to trick or treat because children are practically the onlyones who celebrate Halloween. But the younger ones should be supervised
    ( 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 year olds ect. ).

Halloween dates back to the Celtic festival of Samhain. Roughly 2,000 years ago, a people known as the Celts lived in the United Kingdom, Northern France, and Ireland. The Celts began their new year on November 1, meaning October 31 was their New Year's Eve. Bonfires and animal sacrifices were common, as were costumes "typically consisting of animal heads and skins." Eventually, the Romans conquered the Celts, and Samhain was combined with other holidays. Now days it is called Halloween.

  9. I do like halloween, but my family doesn't celebrate it. I have only been trick-or-treating once and I did find it fun because it isn't everyday that you get to ask some random strangers for lollies!!!

Halloween, celebrated on the 31st of October, is a mix of ancient Celtic practices, catholic and roman religious rituals and European folk traditions that blended together over time to create the holiday we know today.

Straddling the line between autumn and winter, plenty and paucity and life and death. Halloween is a time for celebration and superstiton. Halloween has been long thought of a day when the dead can return to earth, and ancient Celts would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off these roaming ghosts. The Celtic holiday of Samhain, the Catolic Hallowmas period of All Saint's Day and All Soul's Day and the roman festival of Feralia all influenced the modern holiday of Halloween.

In the 19th century, Halloween began to lose it's religious cannotation becoming a more secular community-based children's holiday. Although the superstitions and beliefs surrounding Halloween may have evolved over the years, as the days get shorter and the nights get colder, people can still look forward to parades, costumes and sweet treats to usher into the winter season.

I recon that children should be allowed to trick-or-treat but if they are younger they should have supervision.

I think that trick-or-treating is a day where you can have fun, dress-up and have lollies!

  10. I havent actually thought much of halloween because I have always lived in the country and it has never been an option to go trick or treating.

Initially Halloween was called Samhain. It originated with the Celts in what is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Northern France. The celebration normally started on the 1st of november because the celts believed this was the start of the new year and it also was marked the end of summer and the start of harvest time. They also celebrated this date to Remember their lost ones.

My family doesnt celebrate halloween!!I think children should be able to trick or treat but I dont think they should expect people having lollies because over here in NZ we dont really celebrate halloween.

  11. My veiw on halloween is a fun night for kids to go around and get some lollies.
Halloween is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31. Traditional activities include trick-or-treating, bonfires, costume parties, visiting "haunted houses" and carving jack-o-lanterns. Irish and Scottish immigrants carried versions of the tradition to North America in the nineteenth century. Other western countries embraced the holiday in the late twentieth century including Ireland, the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom as well as of Australia and New Zealand.
Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (pronounced "sah-win").

My family doesnt celebrate halloween!!! I think kids should be able to trick or treat but if they are little they should have adult supervision.

  14. Halloween originated in Ireland with some people called the celts cos they thought that was the start of the new year it was originally called Samhain and was when the celts celebrated their dead and had a festival with bonfires and stuff

We don't celebrate Halloween mainly cos we live in the country and would have to walk for ages between houses and wen we got their no one would have any lolies to give us cos they don't celebrate Halloween either

I think people should be allowed to go trick or treating cos it's fun and you get free stuff but I also think younger people shouldn't go by themselves.

On this blog, some are saying its from america. some are saying ireland. some are saying britain.

  18. My family don't celebrate Halloween,it has become too consumer orientated and most people have no idea what it is really about. It is a celtic tradition, originally called Samhain, celebrating the beginning of winter. Trick or treating should be allowed but if people do not want to have people at their door they could just not answer the door.
