2011 Current Event 1

The Canterbury Earthquake has caused significant damage to AMI stadium. Whether the stadium can be repaired in time for the world cup is questionable.

Should AMI stadium be kept as a world cup venue? Why/ Why not? Discuss your thoughts with your parents. You should explain your ideas clearly.

If you have time look up google images 'AMI stadium earthquake photos' to help you make your decision. And read the article below by clicking on the link.

  1. I dont think it should be held here because they should rebuild all the homes first so people can have a home to live in. When every ones in the stadium another one could happen and could injure or even kill people and not many people because they will be scared that another might happen.

  2. I think we should NOT have the rugby world cup in Christchurch.
We shouldn't be throwing all our money at the AMI stadium rugby world cup. We should be focusing more on our earthquake effected areas.
Right now, my opinion is that the rugby world cup is the least of our worries at this particular time. To add to that, I think tourists and people not living in Christchurch will feel uninclined to come to the AMI stadium rugby world cup due to the devastation they have seen on thier television or heard on the radio etc...

  3. Im not sure because we should really be repairing or demolishing peoples homes and then do the AMI stadium but if we held it here then other places will think that christchurch is strong and can get back up when something knocks them down even if it is a 6.3 earthquake.
    So im not sure!

  4. I think the rugby world cup SHOULDN'T be in Christchurch. Accomadation is an issue as many places are red stickered or demolished. People from overseas will NOT be wanting to come to Christchurch as the don't want to risk there being another earthquake. The Rugby World Cup should be held somewhere else so people can have a good time without worrying about there being an eathquake.

  5. I think we SHOULD have it because its a honour to be able to host it. And if we were to it would keep peoples minds off the earthquake because they would be drinking and watching the rugby having fun. Plus it would be great for the economically because of people buying tickets and all the money from the tickets can be put towards fixing Christchurch’s buildings and homes in the future. And if it was in Wellington who knows that the big earthquake wont hit when the Rugby World Cup is on , so when people from over seas go to Wellington they are taking just as big as a risk going to Christchurch.

  6. I think we should hold the cup because there are different types of builders ones that work on house and the others work on big constructions like repairing ami stadium and the money that the tourist spent will help the Christchurch economy get more money flowing through.

  7. I don't think they should play the rugby matches in CHCH stadium ,because the priority is to help the people of CHCH first .
Fixing the rugby stadium is not a priority use the profits made of the rugby cup to rebuild CHCH .

  8. I think they shouldnt be held in christchurch because we wont have the accomidation and it would be diffucult to move around the city to even get to the games because of the colapsed buildings and cracked roads and demelition going on also the money we have should be put into peoples houses and the CBD so christchurch can be back to normal before we worry about tourisim

  9. I think the world cup should be held else where, because there are lots of other placs that are way more important to be rebuilt first.
Besides, CHCH needs to be cleaned up so much before we should even think of having the world cup there.
Hello people!!! :) Been a while since I've been on this webpage and I'm bored.

  10. As much as I think it should be held in Chch because it would bring in money to help get us back on our feet and show the country and the world how we are recovering. I also think there are a number of things we are lacking such as accommodation, roads in normal condition as well as the places people would also like to see like the Cathedral and other sightseeing places. People that do come will not find it as enjoyable as they would have hoped because they will worried about the big earthquake or little aftershocks that may happen. So I'm not sure wether i think the rugby world cups should be held in the chch AMI stadium .

  11. I dont think it should be held in christchurch because they need to help people without homes amd they need more accomadation because a lot of it would of been damaged. Tourists would like to go to malls and shops but quite a few would be damaged. Everyone would get frustrated because the roads would become even more packed and some roads are still damaged.

  12. Yes, because it will get our local business like hotels and cafes up and running again to provide income and employment. It takes your mind off the past experiences of the earthquakes. It gives off good vibes to other communities saying that even though our province has had a major natural disaster, we can come back from that and host a world cup.

  13. The Rugby World Cup should not be held in Christchurch because AMI stadium is no were near ready and Chch has far not enough accommodation for the over sea’s travellers. Also Q.E 2 is where the opposition teams are going to train is going to be demolished.

  14. i think we should have it here becuase what about those who lost every thing in the quake who have tikets wont be able to go thell have no money

  15. I think the Rugby World Cup should still come to Christchurch! It would lift peoples spirits, it would be a great comeback from the earthquake and it would be a tribute to the lives lost. It would raise money to help rebuild Christchurch. Because of no accomadation we could get temporary tent villages, cruise ships in or people could volunteer to open up their homes. Bring on the Rugby World Cup!

  16. I’m sitting on the fence. I don’t know if it is good for Christchurch to host the Rugby World Cup, but I can also see the positive side in it.

I don’t think Christchurch should host Rugby World Cup games because of the stadium. It is damaged, and liquefaction is on the playing fields and the practise field neighbouring it. It is not only that, but where will all the tourists stay if they even decide to come to Christchurch. The Grand Hotel Chancellor is either going to fall down from an aftershock or will be demolished. This is a massive hotel which could have catered for so many tourists, which now cannot be used like many other hotels or motels around Christchurch. Also lots of other training and practise grounds around Christchurch have been damaged. The QE11 stadium is going to have to be demolished with an unsafe building; one of the biggest training grounds in Christchurch. Not only the previous things, but aftershocks could spell panic in the stadiums if one occurs during a game. It is also not a good site to visits with most of the buildings in the Central Business District in bad shape.

But there are also positive things that come with hosting the Rugby World Cup. Imagine all the money that is generated because of the foreigners’ spending money. All this money that is made could help with the rebuilding process. If visitors put around or more $1 billion in the Christchurch economy, that is already a billion made from the possible $16 billion that it could cost to put the Garden city back on its feet. Hosting the games will also make sure that Christchurch is able to host such a big event, and maybe after this is over, people will think maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to cancel their trip to Christchurch. If nothing happens during this event Christchurch will have a much better image. If some accommodation or other things are not available in Christchurch, then it can be moved to surrounding areas, and this will also boost those places that were going to miss out in the money if the earthquake had not aroused. Rangiora for instance will get more money through the doors with visitors coming for shopping instead of the CBD and also other places including Ashburton, Kaiapoi, Amberley, Rakaia, and Pegasus all also get more money.

I’m torn between these two, the safety of the visitors, and the possible money that will be made.

    Nick.

  17. The rugby world cup should be held in the chch ami stadium. It would be a sign that says chch can get through anything. It would be a good spirit lifter in such tough times. One of the flight businesses has organised some flights so that when the world cup starts the audience can get a deal so they dont have to stay in chch overnight. The money that is pulled in from this event could do a great deal of repair for the chch community. The people of chch need need a boost after the recent events, we cant live in fear forever.

  18. i think the rugby world cup should still be held in chch becuase it would lift peoples spirit and let them have a taste of the world cup it would be good for chch becuase a earthquake is probably most likely to happen in wellington or aukland

  19. I think the world cup should be moved to somewhere else because of the traffic of people trying to get in and out of the games and it will take hours to get there with the road conditions. plus they do not have enough accomadation so i think they should have it somewere else.

  20. I've made up my mind I think the World cup shouldnt be held here because of the roads, acomadation, not many people would want to come to chch and cause the people in chch are more importent than the Tourists that arent even here yet.

  21. No because all of the focus should be on the displaced citizens of Christchurch. These people need housing, jobs, food, schools and basic ammenities restored.Sport can carry on if possible but money should firstly go to the needy. If things were reversed what would you want.Focus should also be on not allowing this disaster to happen again.

  22. I think that we shouldn’t have the Rugby World Cup here in Christchurch because there are more important buildings like people’s houses, in Christchurch to fix and repair than the AMI stadium. The roads are not in a good enough state. Also if we did have it in Christchurch not as many people would come, because they would be scared of another earthquake.

  23. i think we should have the RWC in chirstchurch because it would be a boost for the ecomimy and the people of christchurch to be able to watch the RWC without having to fly anywhere and pay more money.

  24. I am stuck on the fence with this one.
Because having them here would be a great honor and it would show that Christchurch is able to stay strong and rebuild, but we could still be putting other peoples lives at risk.
If they moved it to another venue then the ones living in Christchurch may not want to go because they would be scared to leave there belongings and also they might be worried about there house but at the same time they could be out enjoying there time watching the rugby !

  25. rugby world cup should not be in christchurch Cos is be hit to badly and people will not come into christchurch. as there is not enough time to prepare the grounds.

    ReplyDelete
  26. i think the world cup should not be in chistchirch because all of the motels and hotels will be demolished and if we set up a camp it a waste because we should use the camp for the homeless

    ReplyDelete
  27. I am still undecided because in some ways it would be good but in others it wouldn’t. A few reasons for having it held at AMI are that Christchurch would be able to show the world how they can get back on their feet quickly, how under these circumstances they have coped under pressure and it would be really good for the people of Christchurch to have something that they have been waiting for to come so they can take their mind off things without travelling far.
On the other side, it wouldn’t be good to have it held at AMI because some people are still petrified of earthquakes happening, there won’t be enough accommodation to house everyone, tourist attractions and historic buildings are all down and may not be repaired in time, for example the Cathedral, and much of the city centre is to be demolished.
So I can’t decide whether it would be better to have it at AMI or somewhere else.

  28. I do think we should've had the world cup in christchurch becease we could use the money to rebuild the homes and if another eathquake hit everyone would be in tents becease all of the hotels are smashed. Also it would just cause more distress for the people of christchurch if we didn't have it here because they paid money for tickets and it is a honour to host a world cup, which comes very rarely. One other thing is that the AMI stadium is one of our last stand attractions in Christchurchso we should use it if we could.

  29. I don't know if the rugby world cup should be held in Ch Ch because if it was hear we could show the world that we can bounce back when times are tough but we realy need to build people homesngive the warmth and food so I'm not sure

  30. I am on the fence about having the Rugby World Cup hosted in Christchurch because if we have it here and we have another earthqauke, there are so many lifes at risk, But i also think that they can clear up the stadium in time for the Rugby World Cup.

  31. i think we should not hold the world cup in christchurch because if the moon man is correct and we do get another big one ami staidum may fall down in the earthquake and put peoples lives at risk

  32. I reckon that they should not have the Rugby world cup here in christchurch because they probably wont have time to fix up the stadium because of all the damadge everywhere. They also need to fix everyone elses homes before they worry about anything else. The people still without homes or cant acess theirs need to be able to find a place they can call 'home' because they are probably already stressed out enough with all the aftershocks and working to rebuild Christchurch.
