2011 Current Events 17

I went to a DP conference on Friday. One of the presenters talked about resilience and hope among children is the key to getting through a traumatic event. Another presented talked about children believing that they pass tests and life's challenges because of luck rather than hard work, and that many children believe that they are just dumb if they don't understand something or perform poorly in tests.

The key ideas from all of this is that children need to have hopes and dreams for a positive future, they also need to understand that success comes through hard work, and that to not give up when you perform poorly at a task.

The following article from stuff.co.nz discusses a phenomena among children who now believe that their pathway to success is to become a tv reality celebrity or to get married to a celebrity.
Take a moment to read the above article. Discuss your thoughts on what you think children need to do to change their view on life and what are the things that adults should be doing to help them.

  1. I love rugby and the opportunity to have the Rugby World Cup here in New Zealand during my life time is great. I think it is a fantastic occasion that will bring New Zealand back into the world. It will also help the members of Canterbury to find something that will please them after these troubled times. Although none of the games are at AMI Stadium, the Cantabrians will still enjoy the experience and they will still be cheering for their favourite team (which will hopefully be the All Blacks).
The Rugby World Cup comes every four years, New Zealand being a land of rugby will cherish this year in particular because it will be the year that is in NZ and it will be the year that the All Blacks win the World Cup since 1987 :D
I will be following the All Blacks because I support them; I will also be following France, England, Australia and South Africa because I reckon that they are the All Blacks main competition, even though the AB’s can easily beat them.
I will be forever cheering for the men in black and white (not the English who are wearing the wrong uniform) and when they win the World Cup it will make New Zealand the happiest country alive!

Saskia (A proud supporter of the All Blacks) :D

  3. Children need to try harder in tests and other things like that, and need to think that it is not just about luck because it is not. When they become adults they need to get a job and not just live off a celebrity or a sport star. In life when things get hard you need to keep on trying and in the end you will be the winner. When teenagers perform badly in tests it is not because they are dumb but because they were not studying.

  4. The children and teenagers need to really go behind the scenes of a reality T.V programme and see the truth about what goes on because 99% of the time it is not what they really think, and once they have started it is not easy to get out with all the publicity. They need to learn to understand that it is worth trying hard in tests and not relying on luck to get you through because if you go in the wrong direction it’s not always glitz and glam like they make it out to be on T.V. If they miss out on the chance of getting a good job they can’t go back and change their scores. Automatically if they get a bad score why keep on trying because the stars on T.V didn’t. When the stars on T.V. end their career in reality shows they have no scores to build on. So why not do it while you have the chance?

  5. if you perform poorly at a test you should definetly think your dumb you should find out what you did wrong and improve on it.also if you get sucked into a celebrity show then you really dont know whats happened to people like thatin most of the time it ends up in drugs to take off the pressure or it ends up in things like plastic surgery.also for those people who think its luck to do well in something look at people like valerie adams she practises almost every day and it shows so that is the same as things like math tests ,if you practise enough then you will do well.

  6. I think that teenagers and kids our age need to see that being on a T.V show isn't all what gets played. If you want money you have to work for it. You don't just get lucky. Like my brother he's studying for an exam and he won't be "lucky" if he passes, its because he studied hard beforehand. Its the same for actors and sports players; they get the big bucks because they practice their lines or they practice and train. Teachers and parents/ caregivers can help by telling us how real life and reality T.V shows are different showing us that if we work well and study, practice we can do it. They can also keep encouraging us to do our best so we won't feel like we're lucky. We'll know we put the effort in and we'll keep doing it to make ourselves feel good.
If you get by in tests by just doing enough you will probably never succeed later in life. That doesn't mean you're unlucky it just means that you just never were bothered and didn't try your hardest.
How ever if you do try your best and get the job you want. It doesn't mean you're lucky it means you got rewarded for persevering in school.

  7. The teenagers who think that they are dumb if they get a poor score in tests, do not believe in themselves, and need to study that subject more until they do. Brittany’s story is just a good example to other teens not to follow the celebrity life into the future, but stay in school and study other jobs they like. The parents of the teens need to encourage them to stay in school to have so back up jobs if the 1st one does not work out. “Because you need more than 1 string on your bow.”

  8. The teenagers who made their dream to be a t.v star should really take the time to think about it, i garantee that most of those teenagers would not expect it, it would be nothing like what they think it is.
Those teens also need to believe that you dont get lucky in tests, its because you tried hard and studied well.
If you think your dumb doesn't mean to stop trying, dont give up just keep going.
If you do bad in tests that doessn't mean that your unlucky it may just mean that you might not have gave your best effort or studied hard enough.
Parents/Caregivers need to encourage teens to stay in school and get an appropriate job.

  9. teenagers might think that if i dont study for a test i could get lucky and do well but if that doesnt happen they might just give up and think they are dumb but the smartest people dont rely on luck they study before tests. They have to also think about getting jobs not trying to become a celebritie all your life. What is the chance of becoming a celebritie and also being a celebritie would be stressful because you wouldnt even be able to get your mail without photographers being there.

  10. Reading the article made me wonder if there are too many celebrity TV programs out there. This whole problem has to start from somewhere and that is that there are so many reality TV programs that it is hard not to view one on a regular weekday night when watching TV. With so many options to those who would like to live this lifestyle, the dreams are there waiting for young adults to pick up. These people need to not focus on the life that they “could” get, but more focus on studying in school and hopefully finding a good job that they enjoy, so then losing that attitude of having to be a celebrity. Like Brittany said in the article, she enjoys her life like it is and doesn’t recommend other people wanting to live that lifestyle. This message needs to be put out to all the children out there who have that dream, because that is the reality and being a celebrity is hard to turn around to being a normal person. Life as a celebrity is not fun and games and is stated in the article with teenagers saying that “you get treated well.” The truth is you don’t. Media are following you everywhere you go, you have to live up to the name of being a role model, like most celebrities you will have multiple divorces and you won’t be able to live your normal life. The glitz and glam isn’t going to last forever, eventually you will get older and they will want a younger actor, but a good job and high qualifications will mean that you are in the work force for longer. Parents have a major role in this. They need to teach children that life isn’t fun being a TV star and should encourage their children to continue with their studies and find a real job which you obtain lots of useful skills.

Children also need to get into their mind set that they are not dumb and the only reason why they think that they are dumb is that they fail in tests due to not studying. Luck has no part in learning and getting a job, only very occasionally luck plays a part. Students need to study and not wait to the last minute or believe that luck will be on their side and these celebrity shows encourage children to not study and get a “care free job.” It is not fair to be “advertising” wrongly what goes on behind the scenes. Continue challenging yourself in life through studying!

  11. i reckon that they just need to grow up there is nothing good being a tv star if they try to act like them and they will be poor living on the street and begging for money all because that they try to act like a tv star they would fail in their grades all because of acting like a tv star because i was watching a programme that a person hated mondays so much that the person killed everybody in his class and that was because of a movie that the person watched about killing

  12. i think tha teenagers need to think more about the decisions they make and think hard about being a tv star. its not all as glamourous as it seems. they do need to grow up because to be famous you have to become famous by your job or business and to have a business you need to strt from getting a good job. you dont just get born famous. its like a ladder of life the first step is getting the qualifications, the second is a job, the third is climbing up that business to the top, and so on. (it is not as easy as 123) and it is not luck that you get the grades you need in school its the fact that you study and if you dont your never going to get any where.

  13. I think it is not good to doubt yourself and say your bad, but if your getting a lot wrong in test or just know your lagging behind then you should defiantly ask for more help in that area. I also think classmates should be encouraging them NOT putting them down, parent also should be able to identify were they are struggling and ask there teacher to help them more in that area or help them at home because there is no point just saying your dumb and then do anything about it.

  14. I reckon they say that they are lucky because they don't beleive in themselves and they didn't expect to pass the test. Rather than saying that they are bad they should go to someone else for help. It's not an excuse, because you need to try hard to acheive something and if you don't acheive it because you didn't try hard enough then you shouldn't try to weasel out of it.

All those teenagers that dream to be on t.v and to be skinny and "beautiful", need to reconsider and think about what they really want to do rather than blocking out the real world, focusing on getting on t.v. Because they might find out that it isn't really that good and how they expected it to be. The parents should encourage their children to stay in school and to work hard on the subject that the teens actually want to acheive in. It is fine if they have thought about it and looked at other options, if they want to be on t.v or to be a model, as long as it doesn't get too out of hand.

    WOW...

  15. I personally think the people who turn out rich and famous from reality TV are lucky but they didn’t work for what they have now. And because of that, many teenagers think they will get the same chance. I think it is a dumb idea to have this as a future and do not expect it to happen to me any time soon.

  17. its not good to say your dumb or you cant do anything right if you fail at a test the reason you probably failed at it was because you didnt study or try your hardest.

i find it stupid how teenagers think that they will marry famous people or sport stars just like that. if any of them teenagers got an opportunity to live their dream and be on tv, most of them probably would change their minds.

  18. I think that it is not a good idea to think that you are bad just because of one test or one action.
It it is not good for people to act like other people because you need to be yourself. And have your own way of doing things.
As all my family members say "you should always be a leader not a follower".

I thimk people should have a more positive attitude towards their work all they do is complete their work but i think they should put more effort in. And they cant just expect to marry a rich person or get on a reality t.v show and win a large sum of money. They should actually try in life otherwise you will get bored.

  20. We live in the generation of wanting something and then getting it. With so many TV celebrity shows operating on television, young people start to think that it is a natural career choice to have. On TV all mishaps are not shown so it looks fun, exciting and you get your fifteen minutes of fame everyday, unfortunately it is not like that and a lot of young people are sucked into that trap.
Since you never see celebrities make mistakes, when you make a mistake you create an excuse that in your eyes explains what happened. Usually the excuse is ‘I’m just dumb’ and then when you do something well it is ‘I got lucky’.
Parents need to set a good example because children watch and learn for their parents more than anyone else. The parents need to get their children to set realistic and achievable goals and move forward in life and to not expect things to be given to them or done for them.
If their parents support them then the only things the children can do is listen and learn to change the way they think.
