Current Events 1 Term 3 2012

Over this term we are going to look at a number of issues relating to the Olympics. Some of these issues  relate to the fundamental nature of the olympics and what they stand for.

The first issue we will look at relates to the use of performance enhancing drugs. A number of Athletes test positive for the use of banned substances every Olympic games. It is more than likely a number of Athletes also beat these tests -especially with the advent of new substances every year. This unfortunately leads us to doubt the performance of many athletes at the Olympics.

The Olympic moto translated means Faster -Stronger -Higher. With this is mind, and the ability for some athletes to beat drug testing;

Should we allow all athletes the choice to take whatever substances they like to enhance their performance at the Olympic Games?

  1. NO! I don't think athletes should be aloud to take drugs because that would deseive the perpose of training hard and working for a medal.Plus those people would set a bad example for the children watching the olympics. It is like saying drugs are good drugs are great and those children later in life will be using drugs.
    SO BAND DRUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. NO they should definitely not use drugs at the olympics it would just be the easy way to get into the Olympics and you would not actually deserve your medal if you got a place because you had not actually worked hard to get it. All you would of had to do is take some drugs every now and then. Also people should not take drugs because if everyone was taking them then you would have to take even more drugs so you could win. And that would be very unhealthy for you and you could die much much earlier than you are meant to because you took so many drugs and got a disease or something
I think you should have to do hard work and perseverance to win the Olympics and not turn it into a contest for who can inject the most drugs into there body's before they race!

  3. I think that the Olympics should stay as they are (drug wise) If they allow drugs it will practicly be saying that anyone can join. For the people who work hard and train hard over grueling years to get to where they are then someone coming along that only trained for a year and taking the gold medal. its just not fair!!!
In the long run it would be extrememly unhealthy for you taking drugs everytime you go to a competition. Plus if you wait a few years and earn your gold medal isn't it better than entering your first olympics and taking gold just to get busted for drugs and getting it a stripped. That wouldn't be nice!
Plus If someone was to enter the Olympics with steriods, win gold, return home, then after three years getting it taken away it wouldn't just embarras them, it would destroy their country's respect at the Olympics for drug taking athletes!

  4. I think drugs are wrong because A- the olympics is the pinnicle of sport and some people spend their entire life training for the chance to compete in the olympics and allowing drugs would put all that hard work to waste because people wouldnt need train to or work for the olympics because they could just take drugs and compete. B- It takes away the enjoyment of the olympics that thrill of watching someone win the gold the pure joy on their face and then you learn that they won not through bard and skill but cheating the rules and beating other that have trained hard and worked their life for the gold. C- In sports like equastrian its not fair on the horses that have no choice in the matter and get stuffed with drugs that could kill them just so their owner can win a medal. This is why i think drugs should stayed banned from the olympics.

  5. No we should keep on testing people for the drugs because in my it is not worth it and it is not a proper win you were cheating. also they should ban all forms of steroids except for medical use as you can die at a young age from them and the side affects are quite severe and it is not worth it for a medal (in my opinion anyway. it takes the enjoyment out of the sport as it just is not right and it makes it wrong and not the same in fact I would not watch the Olympics (any of the events even ones that steroids would not enhance the players abilities and performance in). Also if someone is found to have used drugs in a past Olympic games they should be stripped from their medal and be banned from returning to the games ever again. also with the use of steroids it would mean anyone could go to the games so anyone who does hard honest training without steroids would end up wasting their time as people who use steroids would probably end up going instead.

  6. I think that we should defiantly ban the use of steroids and drugs! they are unfair and dangerous, and it is harder on the other honest competitors! People that cheat in the games are also cheating themselves. Anyway if you were caught the public humiliation would be almost unbearable! People could also severely damage their artery's, could give them a bladder disease, and possible heart disease.
steroids also accelerates premature baldness in males. steroids imitate testosterone so if a woman was to take it she could possibly go bald and develop male characteristics.
with everything considered, i think steroids should remain banned.

  7. I do not think athletes should be alowed to take drugs because it is how good there body is and they are npt how good drugs can make you. also if you do get in you should not desirve the metals and no matter how long after the race they should get stript of there metals.

  9. they should beable to because they will pay for it with their lives just for gold medels.

i also think that they shouldn't beable to because it is cheating and putting someone else behind 1st,2nd and 3rd

  10. Ithink that taking drugs at the olympics is a very bad idea it is efectively cheating andthe more honest athletes that dont take drugs are missing out on a chance to get placings and medals but then if they are god sports then they should know who the real winners and losers are if they know of any one that is actully taking drugs but then again most of the athletes probly do already take drugs and the drugs that can have some very bad effecets and and if somone wants to pay for a medal with there life then I guess that that is there problem. I think that in future Olympics they should run tests and strip anyone if they are tested positive but then like I said if anyone wants to wrisk there lives to earn a medal that they might not even get then thats fine by me

  11. i think that people who take drugs to improve their performance should not be aloud to take part in the olympics because it is not fair on the other competertors. the other particapints give it their all but most of the time the miss out on 1st 2nd and 3rd place because the other people who have takin drugs have taken up their places.before the races they should do tests on some people to test them to see if thoes people have takin drugs and if the tests are positive they should be disculifide from their races. so i think that people who take drugs should be stripped of their metal and not to be aloud to particapate

  12. in my opinion no one should be allowed into the olympics with drugs of any sort because if we dont bother someone could take drugs and come first then the other athletes would get annoyed that the winner took drugsso they would too, and beforeyou know it every body in the whole olympic games is on drugs!!! But then if they are all on drugs the whole prosses would start all over again. then they will all die early and we might not be able to find new athletes and then there is no more olympic games!!! The games are about who is the best athlete not who knows the best drug dealer!!

  13. i think we should keep drugs banned because if everyone is useing them it takes the fun out of the olympics and the poorer countrys wouldn't be able to win because they can't afford the drugs and anyway its who can get the most drugs to win its to see who the best athlet in that sport.

  14. I think drugs should be banned because they make the games unfair and boring if the person wins by cheating. Drugs like steroids are used alot in events like the tour de france, and if it came into the olympics less people would watch just like the tour de france.

  15. I think drugs in olympics should stay banned because its not really being in the spirt of the event and even if the a player who wins a medal was on steroids or other drugs and got away with it they wouldnt be proud of what they acheived. well i know i wouldnt because you dont know if you won because of the drugs or your hard work and that wouldnt be a very good felling at all because you dont deseve the medal if its not really you who has done the hard work it was the drugs.and it is not very good for your heath to be hyped up on drugs the whole olympics either !!

  16. Drugs should stay banned forever because if you are able to use them third world countries that enter might not have enough money to get them so they have a less likely chance of winning and if you win your not really winning on your natural abilities.Anyway if you use them they could harm you.

  17. No I think drugs are wrong!!! because the Olympics is so big and so many people train soo hard to get the chance to compete there and letting drugs ruin all that hard work go to waste is the most stupidest idea I’ve heard in my life because people wouldn’t need to train or work for the Olympics because they could just take drugs and compete that is so sad because other people who work as hard as they can don’t come the place they want and think its not worth it because they never come the place they want when really they probably would its just that other people cheat there way through it with drugs and also taking drugs ruins all the fun and enjoyment on peoples faces and the worst part is learning that your favourite athlete has been taking drugs and is on steroids soooo please Bann drugs from Olympic athletes
