Current Events 2, 2012 Term 4

In Italy 7 people involved in the forecast and prevention of major risks have been convicted of manslaughter and risk a lengthy jail sentence. The court found that they should have done more to warn people of the potential risks of an earthquake.

Read the following article and answer the questions below:

Stuff.co.nz article

Should the 6 scientists and government official have been charged and convicted with manslaughter after what is essentially a natural disaster?

Should our scientists and government officials also be charged with manslaughter after the February Earthquake last year?

Explain your answers.

  1. Absolutely not! they shouldn't be put in jail because the prediction wasn't that accurate, so they might not have had enough evidence to warn people. I think the goverment is justy trying to blame someone for the disaster. Anyway, if they did warn anyone, it wouldnt have meade a big difference to the destruction caused.
so in the end I think they shouldnt have to go on trial, or be charged.

  2. No they should not be put in jail for not accuratly predicting the earthquake as they my not have had enough evidence to prove that it was due to go soon and also no-one can accuratly predict earthquakes and also it was a natural disaster so the scientist's could not have stopped it. they should not go to jail or be charged.

and no our scientists should not be charged for not predicting the earthquake as a few days before they had done some tests on the fault line and said that there was a very low chance of there being a magnitude 6+ earthquake and their prediction of another large earthquake was made way before the febuary earthquake and as time went on the risks died down

  3. I do not think they should be put in jail because it is plain and simple YOU CAN NOT PREDICT AN EARTHQUAKE. That is about enough evidence to prove they shouldnt be put in jail. It is completely stupid if they get put in jail.

the scientest should not be charged for predicting the earthquake because it was complete luck that it happened on the exact day that they predicted it.

  4. I definitely do not think that they should not be put in jail because even if they had told people that there was going to be an earthquake people probably wouldn't have actually believed them anyway because you can't actually predict earthquakes for sure

I think that it's the same with the nz earthquake not many people would of actually believed them . I also think its ridiculous to put them in jail anyway just for not telling anyone about it. There might of been more reasons anyway.

  5. there is no way that they should be put in jail because there is no possible way to predict an earthquake, and that they were just geussing anyway.

but how did people end up knowing anyway? i guess i was not listeng in class.

  6. NO they shouldnt have because noone can predict the date, time and magnitude of a natural diaster. you can say that there may be one by tested fault lines and stuff like that but even that isnt accurate.

And no i our scientists should definitiely not be convicted of man slaughter because they did the best they could and any way they did say we would possibly have a magnitude 6 earthquake.

  7. i think that they should of warned people of the earthquake but they shoudn't be areested because you still cant predict the actual time and date of it.

i think our scientists should not be convicted becasue they did do their best to warn us about it

  8. i think that they shouldn't be arrest
because they didn't predict a earthquake

and no our scientist should not be convicted
of manslaughter because they did their best
to warn people that their was an earthquake
coming and estimated it around about a magnitude
    6 earthquake.

  9. i dont think scientists should be arrested for manslaughter because people died in earthquakes because it isnt their falt that a earthquake hit they didnt start it

and our scientists did their best to warn us and it was just unfoutuatet that those people died that day. but at least they tried their best to tell us

  10. i think its stupid that the scientists got arrested because no one can predict an earthquake. even if they knew of some minor tremors or even if hey knew a big one was coming they dont know where, when, or how big it is. what if they had told everyone , the country would spend millions on evacuating people and then if there wasnt one they would probly be aressted anyway

i dont think they should be charged because no one can accuratly predict an earthquakeit is bad luck those people got killed but i think its just silly that they sentaned those people to prison.

  11. I think its ridiculous that the italian scientists got arrested and got charged of manslaughter. you can't predict a earthquake accurately.all i can say is it is STUPID!!!!!!

  12. I think its kind of ridiculous that they're being charged with Manslaughter, if did have some faint idea about an Earthquake that was about to occur but kept it to themselves I wouldn't have blamed them, the same thing would have happened if they had predicted wrong. I don't think they should be put in jail over a natural disaster.
No one can predict accuratly for when an earthquake can strike its just not something you can tell easily, thats why its called predicting.
I don't think that our Scientists should be charged because we knew that there was a huge chance that another earthquake could strike soon and in a way we were prepared but not for one of that magnitude.

  13. The scienists should not be charged for manslauater. Because how are they supposed to predict the earthquake.
Plus dont you think that if they do that in future no one will want to be a scientist. Also it is wrong because they tried there best but offestly that isn't good enough for them.

  14. It is silly that they got charged and arrested for manslaughter but why didnt they say that they have pridected that there was a earthquake coming. so i am kinda on both sides they should have told someone and it is silly to arrest them.

  15. I don't think they should be put in jail because there is no way they you could ever predict earthquakes its Impossible and its stupid to arrest them for it and I do not think that our scientists should be arrested either because of the same reasons by Georgia

Its stiupid how they are been charged with manslaghter because its impossible to predict an earthquake and im sure that if they knew a earthquake was coming that they would warn everyone and get the city prepared for the earthquake.

  17. No i dont think these people should be prostcuted for something that is not caused from them. They could have been unsure about the prediction and being prosicuted for somthing like this is completey unfair. ben

  18. I think that its really messed up because they might of predicted it but no prediction can ever be 100% completly and utterly correct! The should NOT be charged with manslaughter because if they didn't predict right people would just think they were loonies, like the people predicting that the world was going to end last year.
Our scientists shouldn't be charged either because natural disasters are just that, they just happen not all of them give a warning and when they do its often a little bit to late.
