Current Events 3, 2012 Term 4

It is a real tragedy when a child loses his/ her life. Last week a young boy was killed when a loaded firearm went off as he struggled with another boy to play with the gun. Read the article below and answer the following questions.

Boy killed in firearms accident

What could have been done to prevent this accident?

Should the 8 year old boy be charged with murder?

What do you think about guns, where and when should people be allowed to have and use them?

  1. I think that it is very sad and that The uncle should be held responsible as he left the boys un attended and that the gun was still loaded if the gun had a trigger guard then that should have been on the trigger and the uncle should havemade sure that there were no bullets left in the magazine of the gun either way he should have made sure that the gun was with him the whole time pehaps it would have been a much wiser idea if it was the boys that went to look for the branch in stead of the uncle that left them practicly on their own with the weapon

If charges are going to be anyone I think that it should be the uncle not the other child as it was only an accident and that the eight year old could not of had much understanding about fire arms safty. the uncle should have been there with the kids or they should have atleast gone with the uncle so the eight year old should not be charged and it would be enough noing that he accidently shot his cousin

I think personly that guns are very benificcial as long as they are used in the correct way and that the handler should have a fire arms lisence I think that for sftey reasons that any child or beginer to the sport shoul be acomanied by and adult with a reasont fire arms licence and very good experience with fire arms
They are very useful for controlling animals such as magpies and rabbits but if not had much experience it should be left to someone that does it successfuly

  2. This story is very sad but it was an accident so not high charges should be made. To prevent this from happening the uncle shouldnt of put the gun down and left it unattended it should have had the trigger gaurd on if had to be put down.,

The 8 year old should not be charged with murder as it was an accident and didnt mean to happen. My sister is 8 and she still doesnt really understand what guns can actually do, she thinks that you just go bang bang and shoot something i dont think she realises how dangerous they can actually be. Thats the same to the little boy who shot the other boy, he prabky doesnt understand it as well.

I think guns are awesome coz you can shoot things with them but only as long as your sensible with them aye.

    Yea thats me done.

  3. this is a very sad story but it was accidental. this should never have happened and could have been prevented if the uncle had removed the bullet from the chamber of his firearm or he had taken the firearm for him while he picked up the stick to carry the coconuts on. he also should have told the children not to touch it as guns are highly dangerous.

the eight year old should not be charged because it was not his fault it was the uncles. if anyone get's charged it should be the uncle as he was the one who left the firearm unattended and he was the one who left it loaded so the uncle should be charged with man-slaughter.

firearms are safe as long as the person using them is sensible and if someone has criminal activity they should NOT be allowed to own a fire arm.

the uncle should be charged because if he was in new-zealand he was not obeying the fun law and he should also be charged with man-slaughter.

  4. its real sad that that boy died it was obviosly accidentle but the uncle could have been alot more careful with the gun he could have taken it with him when he went looking for that stick, he could have taken the boys with him when he went looking,he could have taken the magazine out, he could have not taken the boys out with him at all, i dont think any one should be charged with murder or manslaughter because the boy that shot him is only eight and the uncle didnt shoot him but i think that all over the world people should have to use a gun licence to get a gun even if you are really sencible with a gun people aruond you might not be i think that there shold be a bit when you get your licence thnat you go on a like whole day course of choosing the people you bring out with you.

  5. it is sad because it was annc=acident i think the boy should get some sort of consequence but the uncle should be charged of some kind of charge. the uncle should not of left a loaded gun and there should of been another adult around so one person got the stick while one could hold the gun. i dont think the firearm was being used responsibly in this case but firearms are completely safe if you a gun lisence but there are different rules round the world :'(

  6. I think that the kid should not be charged because he is only eight, and it was more of his uncles fault than his. The uncle should be the one with a murder charge, because its just stupid to leave a loaded gun around unattended with the kids around. If he has a license he should lose it, and if he doesn't he should also be fined for that.so much more caution could have been used to prevent the accident, its just tragic.

  7. I think there could of been a lot done to prevent this terrible accident
First the uncle could of just not put the gun on the ground or at least he could of had some safety on it like take the bullets out or something else to make sure the little boys could not come to any harm.
Or if he didn't do that he could of not brought the boys along if they were that little in the first place. He could of left them at home and taken them to something else that's safer. Also he could of told the boys that they were not allowed to touch the gun and if they did they would be in serious trouble. If not these things then he could of bought another adult with him so that they could go find a stick instead of the uncle.

I do not think that the eight year old should be charged with anything I have an eight year old cousin and I know that he would never ever have meant to hurt anyone. He probably didn't know how dangerous it was and thought it was something you could mess around with.

I think that to be able to use a gun you need a gun licence and to get a gun licence you need to have a really good record. Also I think that children shouldn't be able to use them till about 15 or something like that

  8. i think that the uncle could have been more carefull about leaving a gun lying around especially a loaded one. but i think the parents of the children should have told them not to touch guns. its so sad that it wasnt even anything important that he put the gun down for, just a stick.
The uncle could have taken the bullets out of the gun or had a trigger gaurd or taken the gun with him.
i dont think he should be charged with murder or man-slaughter because it was probably an accident and he is only 8, they dont really think about the concequences of doing somthing plus when he is older he will probably beat himself up enough about it without going to prison or whatever.
people should be very carefull with guns because they can seriosly hurt somone like this case use them obly if you have a licence.

  9. I think that the uncle should have been accompanied by another adult because they are to young to know about safty around fire arms. Also he should have not put the loaded gung down, he could of at least taken the bullets out. The boys could have helped him find a branch instead of just leaving them there, unsupervised with a gun.
I don't think that the eight year old should be charged with anything, he probably feels really bad about it wouldn't you if you just shot your younger cousin? If anything it was the uncle's fault because he wasn't responsible with a loaded gun, him not being there makes it worse. He should have told him not to touch the gun and taken it with him.
I don't really see the point in guns. You can go out shooting and its fun but taking two little boys out to shoot pigeons is against common sense. I understamd that some people love shooting and is a fun hobby but if you are going shooting and are taking children that don't have gun licenses teach them how to be safe around guns!

  10. I think the kid should not be charged but the father and uncle should the kid should probably go to juvy . one of the adults should have been looking after them or they could have unloaded the gun and took the bullets . but i think the kids should have just stayed at home they are to young to go out hunting. Adults should be able to use them but with no young children around and if there are they should have someone there to look after them.

  11. I think that the uncle should be charged as he put a loaded gun down on the ground and also the 8 year old should be charged of something as even though he didnt mean to he still shot the 5 year old.I think that to prevent this accident the uncle shouldnt of put the loaded gun down on the ground near two young kids that dont understand what guns can really do. Also i think that the two young kids shouldnt hav been out with their dad hunting because they are two young. I think there should be an age limit on guns to keep people safe because i believe that guns are more than cars. I think guns should only used to control pests such as rabbits and magpies and by the police.

  12. the 8yr old should not be charged for murder because he is to understand what has happened but then again it depends on the type of child it is. This accident could of been prevented easly by if the uncle had asked the 8yr old to look for the stick so he could keep hold of the gun and also the other child could help to. people who use guns have to be mature and sensible so we can make sure this will not happen in nz.

  13. i think alot could have been done to prevent this accident there should have been more adults to supervise the children and the loded gun should have never been left un supervised either.

i think its silly even to be thinking about charging him with murder in the first place of cource it was a accident hes to young and im sure he didnt mean to hurt him at all and he will have to live witththat for the rest of his life that is a punnishment in itself

i dont think anything should change because of this event people just need to be alot more carefull

  14. this is a very sad event and should have of never happened, first of all the gun should never of been left anywhere the kids could reach and the uncle shouldn't have of left un supervised.

i think that the kid should be charged but only lightly because he is young and that he didnt mean to hurt his cousin.

i think that guns should be alowwed to hunters, police.

i think that the boy should never be charged because he never meant to hurt anyone and because it was an accident

i think that only police, hunters and farmers should be allowd to use guns. and of course they must have a gun licence to be able to use them o course

  17. Well for starters he probably shouldnt have been bringing younge children with him and he should have either taken the gun with him to find the branch or he should have put on the safetey or have a trigger lock with him.

No i dont think he should because as a younge child he probably didnt know what might happen if he shot it and it was the adults responsibilitie to keep the children safe.

I reckon people in every country should either have a gun licence to go out shooting things or have their fire arms taken.
