Current Events 4 Term 4, 2012

Tonight is Guyfawkes night. Over the past three nights at home we have been subjected to explosions and ratta tat tat's throughout the best part of each evening. I still remember the excitement that we had when we where children coming in to Guyfawkes each year. But for me the excitement has dissipated. Every year there are fires started from fireworks, usually sky rockets, as well as a multitude of incidents where children and animals are harmed. Some deliberate acts of abuse. Dogs and cats are often scared out of their wits and small children wake up crying because of the excessive noise.

Not wanting to spoil anyones fun I do suspect that our society has grown away from being able to secure a responsible attitude and use of fireworks. So I ask you the following questions.

In your opinion should personal fireworks be banned and public displays become the norm?
Or should people still be allowed to purchase fireworks and let them off in their own backyards?
What could we do to make the use of personal fireworks safer for everyone?

  1. Ok, i personally hate fireworks as i have no interest in them and all they are is a coloured ball flying into the sky and exploding. no personal fireworks should not be banned but be much more heavily restricted like they should not let you purchase fireworks if you have ever commit arson or have ever been caught purposefully using them in a dangerous way. and they should sell them in smaller packs because frankly i think that no-one needs 200+ fireworks for themselves. also i think they should make fireworks less powerful as they are currently overly powerful and the only really powerful ones should be at public displays.

i do not see the point in celebrating guyfawkes day as he was a person trying to blow up a parliment building which is illegal so why are we celebrating a criminal, and also 2/3 of the times i have done fireworks one has fallen over and shot at me and the house so now i despise them

  2. i think that the age restirction should be put up to 25 with an I.D to stop teenagers runing around with them but i dont think they should be banned because alot of people look forward to letting off fireworks each year and seeing them explode in the sky and seeing all the formations and colours and a limit for how much you can have each year.

  3. I think that fireworks should not be banned completely as a graeter percentage enjoys them but the are harmful bso as long as they are in the right hands then they are safe to use.I think that public displays should still keep on going as they are a lot of fun and are very entertainable ans as well the fire brigade are normaly around and there are adults around and kids dont norrmally hang around the fireworks.
I think that age should still be alot older if people can purchouse the fire woks as some eighteen yer olds can still do some silly things with the fireworks and that there should only be a limmited amount of fireworks in each box instead of being able to buy some fire woks packs that have about 200 fire works in them not that many would buy that many but I imagine that some people would just to have some fun.

I think that to make fireworks safer you would have to be alot older to purchouse them like say 22 and thatmaybe you have to do it on so much land like say 3 acres to set off the fire works and that you should only beable to do it a local park or privately if you have anough land to do it on then that is when you should be able to go to a park to set them off but either way its really cool to go some where like sparks in the park to watch the displays without worring about having to buy the fireworks and if you have a pet that is frightened you cant really haelp if the nabours are doing it so you could keep your pets inside for the night and if it wakes upchildren then perhaps they cpould sleep with their parents or if they are olenough watch whats happening with their mum and dad

  4. i do not think they should be banned from personal use because most people are safe and sensible with them and it would be ashame to see them banned from personal use because some people cant make it out to public displays

i think there should be rules i think that after 12:00pm you cant set them off and there should be an age limit to buying them because teenagers can be quite dangerous with them a stupid . Georgiaaa

  6. I think that private fireworks should be allowed because people do it for fun and they are fun. Yeah some accidents happen and people get injured but if that doesnt happen it is really fun to see them.

I think that lost of the accidents with the shooting of roman candles and other stuff like that are because of people being drunk so they should have a drinking limit on guy fawkes day

  7. I personally dont get fireworks as basically all they do is look pretty but lots of people enjoy them so they shouldnt be banned. But their should be more restrictions like you can only set them off if you are over 20, there should be a drinking limit on guy fawkes night and you shouldnt be allowed to set them off after 11:00

  8. i think that personal fireworks should not be banned because
people that purchase fireworks and light them are at or above the age limit and should be uesed sensiblely and carefuly.
to make them safer we could set a time that personly fireworks should not be uesed at like 12:30 and to make sure
there is one sober person to look after the fireworks and the people around them.

  9. I THINK THAT PERSONAL FIREWORKS SHOULD NOT BE BANNED BUT THERE SHOULD BE A SAFTY THING ON IT LIKE A AGE LIMIT/NEEDS TO BE AT LEAST TWO PEOPLE THAT ARE SOBBER AND SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO BE ANY PERSONAL FIREWORKS AFTER THE TIME OF 1.30AM BESIDE PUBLIC FIREWORKS RUNNED BY A SENSIBLE APPROVED PERSON OVER THE AGE OF 30

  10. I definitely think that fireworks in the garden should not be banned because they can be really fun if you use them wisely. I think there should not be too many rules put into place because most people that buy fireworks are sensible with them. But I think that you should be sober when you buy them and if you use them in the evening then maybe there should be a time when you have to stop using them

  11. I like fireworks but I agree that society is being very careless with the way we sell them and use them and why do 10 year olds have fireworks that's just plain stupid and dangerous they are as dangerous as guns so they should be treated like guns with licences and more enforced laws surrounding them people can be killed and people's lives are worth more than a few seconds worth of fire.

  12. I think that more public displays should be formed in parks and so on I remember in Auckland they had huge displays in parks. Nearly every single one had them. They also stopped early because of younger children. I don't think that personal fireworks should be banned as such more of having a limit to how many you buy and how many stores sell. I think that all fireworks except public displays should not be allowed after 11:00 so that at least some people get sleep.
Overall there isn't point to guyfawkes people are still letting fireworks off now. You should only be able to let them off a day before and after guyfawkes and possibly the closest weekend.

  13. NOOOOOOOOO WAY fire works definatley shouldnt be banned at home and to purchase at stores. I think they are great fun and a ausome way to celibrate the holiday. Maybe one way to make it safer is to have the nearest perk or field set up so that people can bring their bought fire works and set them off in the wide open area but still people will be allowed to set them off at home. by ben

  14. i don't think that fireworks should be banned at home but they should only be sold to people who are responsible and wont burn down houses or put any one or anything in danger. i agree with kerrin that there should be a time restriction and how many that people can purchase. i remember that people started letting off fireworks about a week before guyfawkes and about a month to 2 months after you were alowed to!
