2011 Current Event 14

Children as young as 10 are being hospitalized in New Zealand after suffering from eating disorders. Why are children so obsessed with body image? And what can we do to stop this worrying occurrence?

  1. the parents should help them because they should force them to eat because if they dont eat then there is a good chance they will die it dosent really matter if they have a little bit of flab on because they are picking their lives over looking good they could maybe go to a person that has exsperienced a eating disorder or to a doctor or something that will help them

  2. i think that there should be a special program for kids with a eating disorder and it does not matter if the person is fat or flaby because thats just who they are and they should except itbut if it carrryes on we could have pearents giving food to the children in school lunches and if they dont eat it they cant play and that cpuld be a ongoig think for anone with a eating disorder

I think schools should have more programes revolving children and their body shapes.
Children should not put them self through eating disorders just because they think they are fat.
just because magazines feature stars with what is regarded "ideal" figures doesn't mean that everyone has to be like them,It's not normal to put you self through eating disorders that can easily hospitalise you just so you can be like those stars.
eating disoreder such as anorexia can make your muscles fade away because your not eating properly, so why do it?

  4. I think that people should be happy the way they are and if thye are so unhappy maybe try a healthy diet not starve yourself. And its not what you look like its who you are on the inside. If children are starving themselves they should go to the docter so children can learn the consequence isnt looking great it can actually be death. The parents with children starving themselves should do something about it.

  5. I think for such a small country like New Zealand to have 29 children hospitalised from 2007-2010 is way too many, and that is just children under 13! Imagine how many more there could be from 14 and up! I think that at school from young ages there should be body image lessons showing that people only care about what’s on the insides and what happens to your body if you get anorexia or balemia. Once they see what you have to put your body through to get the “perfect image” it will put them off it. These days there are way too many stars displaying that if you are skinny you are more attractive. Because young children look up to alot of these people as role models they are influenced by the fact that if they are skinny then it’s ok for them to have that image for themselves aswell. Children need to start liking the outside of themselves the way they are. If the result is death why choose to be skinny over having a life? Rose :)

  6. I think that its just stupid to worry about your image appearance because no matter wat you look like it shoudnt matter because how are you are portayed as a person shoud be from your personality and the way you act. A way to prevent this would have some sort of class to show you that your appearance isnt important and that its wats on the inside that matters. one of the causes of this could maybe be yuor friends making yoou think that its cool to starve yourselfs well then maybe their not your friends

  7. Children look up to Celebs with skinny bodies because they think it matters. It doesnt help that celebs are giving advice out about how to look like they do and messaging that being skinny and thin matters the most. Children have dreams right? Yes and with these celebs urging them to get thin in order to be cool or to become famous it kind of sends out that 'If you want to look like me then do what I say or else you will never ever be famous' they either have to give up or stop eating a healthy amount. Lots of parents and teachers tell children to follow their dreams and thats what they are doing but looking like a celeb and being one is different. You need talent not just looks.
To help this problem teachers need to help, they need to urge students to stop doing it and show them how harmful it can be. They also need to incourage parents to take their child to the doctor if they look weaker and downer than usual. Parents need to see if their child knows about that when you stop eating food in healthy amounts, your body will be weaker and as you carry on you will feel weaker to. They can also take them to the doctors at the first sign of eating less food which could save their lives in the long run.

  8. children shouldn't starve themselves because they think they are fat, they could just go on a diet or just be happy with the body the've got. starving themselves is really dangerous because it might end up with a matter of life or death, the parents also need to do something abou their children stavin themselves. as you stave your self you body becomes weaker as your body starts to eat up all the muscle. i also think that the schools should have a program or kids with an eating disorder

I honestly think that the main thing that pressures children are the way celebrities look with their thousands of dollars worth of diets, plastic surgeries, personal trainers and gym equipment. And the bullying and sarcastic remarks make it even harder to accept themselves and feel good about themselves. And eventually it gets to much and they either lose lost or weight and muscle, (anorexia) or stuff themselves with bad feelings and later on feel guilty about it and make themselves sick. (bulimia)And they way to stop them being sick I think is to compliment these people lots, take them to a clinic or tell them directly they need help and get it for them. If people were more polite and nice to people these things would never even happen.

  16. Well, these children must have developed these issues over time, because it is not normal to be eating, eating and eating and then vomit it all out again to make them feel better or pretty much starving themselves to death due to not enough food. It is very sad seeing a person feel bad about their image when it is perfectly OK but only influenced by modern day stars that are super thin. Yes these influential people say that “you are who you are” but the message is not getting across and they are not exactly setting the right example with having surgery to get all the excess fat out. If younger children see that, they think it is OK to be having surgery to have fat removed, and take such extreme measures just for a perfect body figure. Diets are there for a reason, to lose weight in a healthy manner and not take extreme measures such as starving yourself. These children are young, but imagine what intense methods such as anorexia or bulimia that they will take when they are older. They will only think for themselves and only about their look! Some children are SO obsessed with their body image because it is “un cool” to be ugly especially when models and “beautiful” people are making millions and getting far in life. Celebrities are the cause of this issue because if they weren’t there, no one could “look up” to anyone with the latest fashions, hair design or body size. Children would be who they are, and people would only care what the person is like in the inside. And that is what matters most. The heart and kindness of a person, not necessarily the beauty and look. In the olden days, eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia were not at all common, BECAUSE IT DIDN’T MATTER WHAT PEOPLE LOOKED LIKE AND THE CELEBRITIES WEREN’T SUPER THIN OR NOT SETTING THE WRONG IMAGE. This is in the modern century a new trend. I believe a lot can be done to resolve this worrying issue; firstly parents need to talk to the child and take measures to stop what is happening. This may lead to going to a counsellor, doctor or specialist to fix the issue. Also lessons during school, both primary and high school, need to be in place to stop what is happening at an earlier age, so decreasing the risk in the long run. And stopping the amount of super thin figures saying, to have a happy life you need to have a thin body because this statement is SO WRONG!

  17. i think it is horrible that children are starving themselves just to look like celebrities, it is WRONG! the government should ste up a program for under 15 year olds to help them with their eating disorders. celebs are putting the wrong thought into young childrens heads and saying that you are not fashionable if you are a healthy weight and size! dont risk not being able to go to the toilet without someone helping you just so that you can be skinny!

  18. I think that media can be blamed for this crisis unhealthily thin models on TV and in magazines are setting bad examples for young girls who grow up in an environment where it is trendy to be skinny. There are campaigns against anarecisicty on television but unfortunately there are more shows about young models being forced to be extremely thin to get into the modelling industry. To solve this problem we could try limiting the available programmes that are allowed on new Zealand TV relating to this issue

  19. I think the media is to blame because all of the people on magazines and people who are supposed to be role models are really skinny. It looks weird and it isn't healthy. Children need a positive image from proper role models and not from pop stars and fashion models. Some models are now the normal healthy size of a human and these are the people we should see on magazines and on the television. It's sad to see children as young as 10 to have eating disorders and have to go to hospital.

i think that magazines and tv shows are to blame because they only use extremely thin people and they should use normal sized people or people from society so that people dont starve themselves or give themselves anarexia so they are skinny and moviestarlike. otheriwse they will be fed through a straw.

I think that its wrong and possibly gross to think people would starve thier body of nutrients to look nice...
Children need to accept the fact that they will not look thin and pretty. It is sad that young people will go though this to either look good or feel better about themselves. Bulimic and Anirexic folk are only torturing thier body and causing serious harm to thier organs etc..
I believe that we should encourage and push children to eat sensibly and not worry about thier individual figure.

This is wrong, harmful and nobody should have to do this.

  22. People in this day and age are far to worriedabout their body image. They get sucked into this world of, I want to be like that person. You either have people who are starving themselves to death or someone who just don't care.So they eat and eat and eat. What ever your body shape is,it isyoursandyou should be proud of it. If not it is up to you to change it. Don't leave it for other people to have to deal with.
If you want to have surjuryyouare putting your life into someone elses hands and somtimes things can go wrong. Anyway at this age you shouldn't have surjury anyway because over time your body can change with pubity. So over all children want to look nice because they want to fit in and look the part and be a follower not a leader.
We need to try and get into peoples minds that you are ok and you don't have to change the way you look.

  23. The impression some children are getting from slim women is that you won’t get anywhere in life if you are not skinny. With no ounce of fat on their bodies, models and celebrities wear an unnatural slimness. Children are then to believe that they are overweight and they want to do something about it. They do so by suffering from eating disorders and by putting their personal health at risk.
The age of children being hospitalised is lowering at a horrific pace because of more and more children concentrating on their looks and judging themselves on their body size.
The public needs to prevent this from happening by modelling more natural body sized people. If someone were to go out and model the clothes that I wanted, I would feel reassured if I knew that they weren’t super thin and making millions of children world wide suffer from eating disorders.

  24. I think it is disgusting that people feel that the need to be that skinny to be appealing. I think people are getting more and more worried about their body image people do not feel confidant about themselves I think they are also influenced by TV adds with actors that have the perfect body and the perfect tan they look at them and think it is natural and want to have the perfect body just like them. i think to stop it we have to stop sterio typing and help people that do not feel confidant about themselves and we need to show them that no one cares about the outside but only what on the inside if that does not work they should get help for her.

  25. I think tat children are mainly starving themselves to look like what is perceived to be the "perfect" figure, what models and actresses are looking like. This is unnatural and unhealthy. Parents should make children more comfortable with their bodies and their body shape. School children should stop being nasty and teasing kids about what they look like because that also fuels the desire to become perfect and thin.

  27. i think its the fear of being faT then they will stop eating food that may make them overweight becuase they may find it ot good to eat meats like chicken, beef, and lamb, and seafood and they are being hospitalised becuase the are refusing to eat it and soon will never eat those sorts of foods again

  28. i think that kids should be taught about healthy food and living. they need to learn that super thin is not healthy just as fat is not healthy. being healthy and living healthy can help us feel good about our selves.
